Pamela White
A native of Pennsylvania, Pamela Gayle White got a Bachelor's degree in marketing from McGill University in Montreal. She then traveled to France where she milked cows, made cheese, learned to drive a tractor and realized she'd rather be a gardener than an advertising exec. She went back to school in France, got a degree in landscaping and horticulture and eventually went to work as head groundskeeper for a Buddhist center in Burgundy where she planted hundreds of trees and shrubs. Although her love for gardens and all things green endures, Tibetan Buddhism has been the focal point of Pamela's life since the mid 1980s.
In 1987 Pamela met the great meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche and began to prepare for the traditional 3-year meditation retreat. From 1991-97 she was in retreat under Lama Gendun’s guidance at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling (DKL) in Auvergne, France. After completing two three-year retreat cycles, Pamela established a home base near DKL and began working on improving her language skills. A translator and interpreter English-French-Tibetan, she has worked on Buddhist practice texts and books, written articles for Buddhadharma and Tricycle magazines and taught in the US and Europe. Pamela frequently travels to the Kathmandu Valley to study and practice with the renowned Lama Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche and improve her Tibetan. Her dream is that one day she will be able to understand everyday Tibetan conversations effortlessly – and maybe even get the joke.
